The Delta Chi hot seat

Brother Fred Moreno of Charlotte, NC volunteered his time to participate in this editions Delta Chi hot seat.  The chapter asked Fred questions about his life and what he has been doing since graduation.

Fred pledged Delta Chi in the spring of 1999 and was a member of Pi pledge class.  He held many chapter offices including president his senior year.  Fred served as the SGA treasurer and was also an honors graduate.  When the Fraternity was off campus in the spring of 2000, Brother Moreno played a vital role in helping the chapter back on campus.  His name is still mentioned often at chapter meetings for the things he accomplished when he was president.  Since graduating from ECU in May of 2002, Fred has been working for Wells Fargo and living in Charlotte, NC.  Fred started out in the Mortgage Division as a loan originator and is now currently working in the closing department, overseeing mortgage closings throughout the country.  His involvement with Delta Chi as an undergraduate has helped him throughout his career and he has used many of the principles and ideals expressed in the Cornerstone and the Chapter Operations Manual in his business.

Fred answered the following questions for the D-Chi Hot seat.

How many times have you come back to ECU since graduation and why?

I have come back to ECU many times since Graduation.  Even though it is a 4 1/2 hour drive from Charlotte, It has not stopped me from obtaining football Season Tickets.  I come back to watch the Pirates play as well as meet new guys from the Fraternity and see how things are going with fellow alumni.

Do you miss being a student at ECU?

I miss the extended vacation time and festivities of the University as well as the common bond of brotherhood....but I do not miss the exams.

How much easier was it to hook up with ECU hotties than work place hotties? Why?

The favorable girl to guy ration at ECU was one of the reasons I always made it to class.  But, while there was easier access to girls on campus, there is not so much in the business world. You really need to go out to meet them and then once you do, they have higher demands from you than they did in college.  So, live it up at ECU while you can.

If you could be an undergrad brother again what would like to change with the chapter?

I probably would have focused on doing more fundraisers.  We relied on our pledge class for this and the money raised was spent on socials.  If I could go back, I would have tried to start a semi-annual fundraiser that would have proceeds going strictly to the Housing Fund.  The issue of a house has been there even before I was initiated and it is still there today.  We need to start a permanent solution for this, and make it long term.

What do you think about the new coach of the ECU football team Skip Holtz?

I think ECU is at a point of transition (again), but I think Holtz could take us back to being conference contenders.  He has his hands full with things the way they are with the conference, but he has an excellent Athletic Director (Terry Holland), I can only be optimistic about the future.

Have you ever come back to ECU and hooked up with an undergrad, if so can you remember there names? Ha

This seat just got very hot!  Well, unfortunately I will have to plead the 5th on this one....but I never forget a name.

The Campus Scene

In recent years the university has gone through many changes with the addition of several new buildings bringing a spark to the campus.  The new Science and Technology building was finished in fall 2004.  This enormous building is located on 10th Street between Umstead dorm and Christenbury Gym.  The renovation and new additions to the Rivers building were needed after a steady increase in students entering the Hospitality and Interior Design majors.  The new West End dining facility is nearing completion.  This massive dining hall is located on the corner of 5th and Reade.  It will have a Subway, Quiznos, and S’barro located in it to serve the 21,000 students that attend school here.  The new baseball stadium is set to be ready by the first weekend in March.  The new stadium will rival any division 1-A school in size and seats.  The old stadium held 1,700 people, and the new one is projected to hold over 4,000.  Many new additions are also in progress, such as dormitories, and a science library.  By 2010 this school is projected to rival NC State in attendance.

Brother to Attend Missouri

Brother Jim Matheny class of ‘99 is planning to attend graduate school for journalism, at the University of Missouri.  Jim pledged Delta Chi as a member of Iota class in the fall of ‘95; he is a legacy to older brother Sam and father Bob Matheny.  As an active brother Jim held many chapter offices including vice president, alumni relations secretary, and rush chair.  In the spring of ‘98 Jim helped set up and run the Regional Leadership Conference which was held at ECU.  His involvement with Delta Chi helped the chapter through some of its best times.  After graduation he became a member of ABT and served on the board for several years.  Check his website out at www.three-castle.com.  Good luck Brother Matheny.

White Carnation Formal

The chapter will be having its 3rd annual White Carnation Formal in Myrtle Beach, SC on April 2nd.  The brothers will be driving from Greenville to the beach on Friday afternoon to meet up with the brothers from Coastal Carolina University that night.  We plan on having social events with the brothers from Coastal and our alumni.  Saturday events will include golfing and a beach flag football game, if the weather permits.  The formal reception will begin at 7:00pm at the Ocean Creek Resort Hotel in their Grande ballroom.  The resort is located on North Myrtle Beach, just off Kings Highway, if you want to check out their web site is www.oceancreek.com.  Dinner will be served at 8:30 followed by an awards banquet and dance.  As many as 50 couples will be in attendance, so you are guaranteed to see old friends and meet new brothers.

If you would like to attend please contact Brad Borst chapter “E” at bjb1117@mail.ecu.edu or (704)-798-1145.

Alumni / Family Weekend

The brothers will be hosting our 1st annual spring Alumni and Parents Weekend on April 9th.  Brother Doug Chananie of “AA” class, has spent time setting up an event that can be geared toward parents and alumni.  The weekend will include an ECU vs. Southern Miss. Baseball game.  We will be tailgating near the new Baseball stadium at around 4:00pm.  Game time is at 6:00, so remember to wear your purple and gold, or red and buff; this event will continue on into the night.  A bar will also be available after the game for any alumni who feel like catching up on old times.  We will cap the weekend off Sunday morning with a luncheon and auction at Ham’s, to raise money for the chapter.  Look for your invitations in the mail.

E-CHI Account

Last September the Delta Chi Education Foundation offered a way to help the chapter raise money for a house.  On the Delta Chi Foundation website www.deltachifoundation.org , donations can be made to the chapter, that money is held until a house is purchased.  The money donated will be for educational purposes only, so you don’t have to worry about the money going toward the social fund.  We have needed a permanent residence since our founding in 1992; this is the perfect opportunity to help the chapter and your future brothers at ECU.  If you have any questions, you can contact the Educational Foundation at (866)-214-8114.

Philanthropy Events

Over the past several years the brothers have made a major improvement to be more involved with local community service organizations.  This year the chapter organized “Can the Van” which was a canned food drive, geared toward collecting food for the homeless.  Over 600 lbs of food were donated and well over 100 hours accomplished by the chapter.  This spring we plan on helping the Special Olympics by working with them at their annual Olympic event.  We are also in the process of organizing a dodge-ball tournament to raise money for that charity.  The chapter also participated in the Heart and Diabetes walks this past fall.

New Chapter Website

Just weeks ago the chapter added a new website.  You can visit it at www.ecudx.com.  The website includes pictures, brother info, calendars, and special events.  The website is constantly being updated, so check on it weekly for new changes and events.  The website will also include an alumni section so you can find and chat with your Delta Chi brothers.  We are also in the process of updating our alumni database.  If you haven’t heard from us in some time please contact us through the website or email Brad Borst (chapter “E”) at bjb1117@mail.ecu.edu, we will try our best to keep you more updated and involved with what is going on with the chapter.
